Prerequisites
The exam requires a good understanding of stages of psychological development in different aspects: cognitive, social, emotional, etc... It is also required knowledge about the main theories regarding the developmental psychology, in particular the innatist and the constructivist approach. Basic knowledge on methodological procedures in developmental psychology is also required.
Learning outcomes
The course will consist of basic and advanced modules.
The goal is to provide the student with knowledge relating to language development and relationships with other psychic functions in children with typical and atypical development (genetic syndromes, sensory deficits, delays and developmental disorders), and tools for language assessment.
The course aims to provide in-depth knowledge of the theoretical and methodological issues related to the study of language acquisition in its various components by discussing the models and analyzing the main stages of both typical and atypical development.
Bilingualism will also be studied in depth.
The risk factors for possible developmental delays will also be considered as well as aspects related to diagnosis will be discussed, with the presentation of tools for evaluating language development and for the identification of delays and disorders in the language area with proposals for protocols and intervention paths.

Processes of language acquisition and processing Language and speech questions.
Biological and developmental aspects.
Models and paradigms of development.
Embodied theory the contribution of neuroscience.
Perception and production of the first sounds before language.
From the first words the prelinguistic communication.
The development of vocabulary.
Generation of grammar and rules construction.
Cognitive development and linguistic development.
From communication to language competence, reciprocity , intentionality and Storytelling competence.
Lexical, morphosyntactic and semantic development.
L1 and L2 acquisition: the case of bilinguism.
Individual differences and social influence.
The role of context and social interaction.
Comprehension and production of words and phrases.

Teaching methods
Frontal lessons and workshops with presentation and discussion of attending students’ essays.
The course is divided into two parts: a first in which the topics are treated in their general aspects and will be of a theoretical nature. In the second part, the lessons will be more interactive with presentations by the students, and will, in part, also be conducted with the contribution of experts in particular topics (e.g. bilingualism, stuttering, specific language disorders, rehabilitation practices), with possible presentations and discussion of cases.

A tutoring activity is foreseen with hours dedicated to: a) further information and clarifications at the request of the students; b) projection and discussion of audiovisuals; c) simulation of assessment tests; d) exercises on specific tools for assessing linguistic ability; e) presentation and discussion of papers.
The lessons will be in the presence and guaranteed the use of the material relating to the lessons and consult the slides or other teaching material from the KIRO university platform

Assessment methods
Assessment and tests. The written examination will consist of open questions of more general issues. An oral exam integration will complete the exam. The examination can be replaced, in whole or partially, by a working seminar on the topics of the course: in this case the candidate is expected to write a short written report, with the possibility to perform an oral presentation which contributes to determining the final grade. Students can inspect their own papers within two months of the written paper. The relevant mark is to be registered within six months after the session of the examination. For registration proxies are accepted only in exceptionally.
In case of non-acceptance of the result, only one possibility of refusal is granted

The course also provides a compulsory tutoring program for attending students (optional for non-attending students).
