• know the specificities of the psychoanalytic approach compared to other psychological approaches and its relevance and fruitfulness both in the professional and cultural fields
• conceptually set the description of psychological functioning in psychoanalytic terms, in relation to the concepts of normality, psychopathology, and individual adaptation
• discussing about psychoanalytic issues
• interpret problematic situations by formulating psychoanalytic hypotheses while working with individuals, couples, and families
Course contents
The course introduces the thought, contents and methodology of psychodynamic orientation, providing an overview of the fundamental concepts and aspects of technical theory starting from Freudian metapsychology up to the most recent developments in the psychoanalytic thought. Attention is also given to the study of normal and psychopathological unconscious functioning, putting the different psychoanalytic models in dialogue with each other and with affective neuroscience. Specifically, the contents of the basic course (8 CFU, 48h) are structured as follows:
• Introduction to dynamic psychology
• Freud: basic concepts, models of the mind, and theoretical evolutions
• The development of psychoanalytic theory: Abraham, Ferenczi, Reich, Rank
• Ego psychology: Anna Freud, Hartmann, Jacobson, Spitz, Mahler
• Object relations theory: Klein, Isaacs, Heimann, Segal, Rosenfeld, Steiner, Meltzer, Bick, Ogden
• Bion
• The British Independents group: Winnicott, Fairbairn, Balint, Bollas
• Self psychology: Kohut
• The concept of dynamic field: Baranger and Baranger
• The representational world: Sandler
• The attachment theory: Bowlby, Ainsworth, Main
• The intersubjective theory: Stolorow, Atwood
• Infant Research: Stern, Trevarthen, Emde, Sander, Sroufe, Schaffer, Beebe, Tronick
• The relational model: Mitchell, Aron, Benjamin, Lichtenberg, Baranger
• The organization of the borderline personality: Kernberg
• Research in psychoanalysis: defense mechanisms and the Defense Mechanism Rating Scales (DMRS; Perry, 1990)
Finally, the course dedicates a monographic section (1 CFU, 6h) to the theoretical-clinical paradigm of the "generational". Starting from the works of Freud, Kaës and Faimberg and through the presentation of clinical material, the nature of the links that exist between subjects of different generations and the application of the "generational" in psychoanalytic work with couples and families are examined.
Teaching methods
Lectures, exercises in small groups, individual and/or group study of clinical material.
