Prerequisites
Fundamentals of Biology and Genetics, if acquired during previous studies.
Learning outcomes
To know well the vocabulary of Genetics and therefore knowing how to recognize the role and interactions between fundamental molecules for genetic information and its expression.
To know the classification of genetic diseases, their main aspects also in relation to genetic tests.
Course contents
Introduction to the Genetics: the vocabulary of Genetics, the main macromolecules and the fundamentals of cells and chromosomes
Human chromosomes and cytogenetics, indications for karyotype analysis
Classification of genetic diseases
Chromosomal diseases: chromosomal abnormalities, aneuploidies and their cause, autosomal trisomies, chromosome structure abnormalities and phenotypic effect
Monogenic diseases: molecular causes and phenotypic effect; Mendelian inheritance and the basic terms: locus, allele, phenotype, genotype, dominant and recessive
