Prerequisites
The APPLIED NURSING RESEARCH Nursing course, developed during the base degree, is preparatory to the APPLIED QUALITATIVE NURSING RESEARCH course. Indeed, APPLIED QUALITATIVE NURSING RESEARCH course consists of an in-depth study of the advanced level that takes place in the master's degree.
The beginner part of the program of the APPLIED QUALITATIVE NURSING RESEARCH course aims to structure a conceptual and language base to standardize basic knowledge.
The attendance at the lessons of "LOGIC AND PHILOSOPHY OF SCIENCE: EXPANSION OF THEORETICAL DISCIPLINARY FOUNDATIONS" course is need to learn the basic knowledge of the APPLIED QUALITATIVE NURSING RESEARCH
Learning outcomes
This course presents the assumptions, methods and techniques of qualitative research to be applied to the nursing and obstetric context, and it aims increasing knowledge relating to qualitative research, focusing on learning strategy.
The course is divided into two parts: (a) the first part explores the theoretical backgrounds, philosophical assumptions and methodologies of qualitative research, focusing on phenomenology and hermeneutics and on specific applications in research conducted in the nursing-obstetric field. The second part explores the methodology and way to conduct the qualitative interview (i.e., focus group), in order to develop the students’ competencies to design, to conduct and to analysis a focus group.
Students will participate in many group exercises during the lessons, to allow for guided learning, in order to achieve these aims.
Course contents
first part
Lesson 1
General aspects of the qualitative research process: epistemology, philosophical basis, method
The positivist-postpositivist and hermeneutic phenomenological paradigm.
Descriptive and hermeneutic phenomenology as investigation methods in the human sciences: applications in nursing-midwifery research
Descriptive and hermeneutic methods in data analysis: an overview in nursing research (part one).
The problem of the philosophical basis of qualitative nursing research.
Lesson 2
the process of knowing the Other and the mind of the qualitative researcher as a heuristic tool.
Phenomenology as a research method and as a development of the researcher's ability to work on himself and his mental posture to meet the experience of the Other.
Epochè, attention, passivity, receptivity
Methodological rigor in qualitative research.
Factors that complicate the debate among nursing researchers in this area.

Second part
Third lesson.
Detection techniques in qualitative research, including the qualitative interview and its use in research
The focus group and its application in research in nursing-obstetric contexts
analysis of focus group designs
understanding of the methodological criteria specific to the definition of the context within which the problem and research question emerge, definition of the objective of the focus group, construction of stimuli and of the primary cognitive question.

Fourth lesson
Qualitative content analysis in nursing research: manifest and latent contents, units of meaning, categories and themes. Methods of analysis of descriptive and hermeneutical phenomenological data.
From the reading of an autobiographical text to the application of the analysis of the manifest content and identification of the themes.
Teaching methods
exercises related to:
-analysis and guided discussion of qualitative research
-guided activity starting from the reading of an excerpt from the focus group
-critical analysis of focus group designs for understanding the fundamental methodological criteria: definition of the context and description of the problem, formulation of the research question, construction of the stimuli, of the initial cognitive question and of the guiding questions, identification of the inclusion criteria of the subjects in the study, types of sampling to be used, explanations regarding the use of a qualitative approach intended as the best method to explore the phenomenon.
-slides and film recordings prepared by the teacher
-podcast for the knowledge of the major phenomenological and hermeneutical philosophers
Reccomended or required readings
Bibliographic information will be provided to students from time to time in each module.

Assessment methods
the final exam is composed by a written and an oral section. The written test consists in the design of a focus group that includes the definition of: context, problem, generative research question, focus group objective, sampling, initial stimulus, primary cognitive question and guiding questions
The project must be sent ten days before the appeal by email. The oral exam consists in the discussion of the written paper. The final evaluation will take into consideration the following aspects: thematic relevance, methodological quality, scientific structure of the paper, argumentative quality
