Prerequisites
The topics covered in the course require that the student has acquired the basic knowledge of the courses of microbiology and Statistics.
Learning outcomes
The course aims to provide the student with the necessary tools to:
- understand and interpret the most important frequency and association measures
- know the natural history of infectious diseases and chronic degenerative diseases
- knowledge of risk factors and prevention concepts
Course contents
General principles of epidemiology: definition of hygiene, health and epidemiology, historical background.
Types of epidemiological studies. Epidemiological measures, association measures and cause-effect relationship.
Risk factors and risk measures. Sampling, bias and confounding variables.
Concept of prevention. Levels of prevention.
Health Indicators and socio-sanitary conditions of a population. Demography. Population pyramids.
Infectious diseases and its hazardous characteristics. Infectious diseases of international travelers.
History of Health Promotion. Promotion and health education.
The determinants of health: Nutrition, Physical Activity, Tobacco Smoke, Drugs and new addictions.
Teaching methods
The teaching is carried out through frontal lessons, supplemented by case studies and guided practical exercises.
