Year of study
Period
1st semester (04/10/2021 - 28/01/2022)
ECTS
5
Language
Italian
Prerequisites
Basic knowledge of Biology, Biochemistry and Sciences as studied in High School
Learning outcomes
Educational objectives include: to provide the student with basic knowledge in biochemistry, biology and genetics so that these can then be used in a practical way in the study of other fieelds and in his / her future professional activity. In particular, the student is expected to acquire a study method that allows him/her to contextualize the concepts studied with the individual problems that they will face in their work. The learning outcomes will allow having a well-qualified professional figure who has up-to-date information on human biology and genetics, who is able to enter the world of work in a proactive way and to collaborate with other professionals (eg . reference doctors of the ward) at a good level.
Course contents
Introduction to human and medical genetics. Heredity / environment correlations. Construction of genealogical trees. Analysis of genealogical trees. Types of inheritance (autosomal dominant, autosomal recessive, X-linked). Recurrence risk analysis. Mutations, mutagens, types of mutations. Population screening for mutations, possibilities and limits. Correlations between genotype and phenotype. Genetic counseling. Main types of chromosomal alterations. Medical indications for karyotype analysis. Correlations karyotype phenotype. Prenatal diagnosis, general information. Prenatal diagnosis, indications. Prenatal diagnosis, interpretation of results. Genetics of tumors. Examples of monogenic diseases. Examples of polygenic diseases. Psychosocial aspects of genetic counseling
Teaching methods
Biochemistry: Frontal lessons.
Lessons will be organized in such a way that there is room for good teacher/student interaction; in particular, all the topics covered will refer to examples of problems that students will have the opportunity to observe with high probability in their working practice.
The interaction will be stimulated with a way of presenting the topics that include, when possible, frequent questions to the students who will be induced to think about the topic and try to anticipate what will be explained later.
The teaching material will be made available to students.
Biology: Lectures. For some topics, in addition to powerpoint presentations, lessons will include online animations and videos. Lessons will give to students the availability of interacting with the teacher and with colleagues
Reccomended or required readings
“Biochimica e Biologia per le professioni sanitarie“ Roberti, Bistocchi, Antognelli, Talesa [ex “Elementi di Biologia e Genetica” – Talesa, Giovannini, Antognelli] – Mc Graw Hill
“Biologia e Genetica” Bonaldo, Duga, Pierantoni, Riva, Romanelli-IV Edizione (ex Chieffi, Dolfini, Malcovati et al. III Edizione) – EdiSES
"Elementi di Biologia" (Cellula-Genetica) Curtis, Barnes, Schnek, Massarini-Zanichelli
“Elementi di Biologia e Genetica” Sadava, Hills, Heller, Berenbaum – Zanichelli
“Biologia e Genetica” Campbell, Reece (et al.) – Pearson
Assessment methods
BIOLOGY: Written final test: 11/13 questions (answer: true / false) and 2/3 open questions. Voting of the module will be the proportional sum of the scores obtained expressed as n/30 (in ex: 15 questions, 6 points for each question, total exact answers points: 81/90, vote 27). The Voting of the Integrated Course will be the weighted average with the Biochemistry exam vote.
BIOCHEMISTRY: Written exam with multiple choice quiz; for each quiz, there will be 4 possible answers; only one the right one; only the right answers will be considered; Points will NOT be deducted for wrong answers; at the end of the course a short simulation of the exam will be carried out using the quizzes of the previous year.
Further information
BIOCHEMISTRY: The didactic material will be available to students; it will be possible, if requested by the students, at the end of the course, to have a meeting, in addition to the hours foreseen by the teaching, during which points of the program that have given rise to difficulties will be clarified and the teacher will give further explanations on what was not clear to the end of the course, and before the exam.
