Learning outcomes
The aim of this course is to treat the basic concepts of classical Physics and, in particular, mechanics, thermology and electromagnetism, to illustrate the scientific method and to teach the appropriate language for the following courses. The method and the knowledge acquired allow the student to apply physical and chemical technologies to solve problems in the field of conservation and restoration of Cultural Heritage.
Course contents
Introduction: Physical quantities and their units. Elements of mathematics to quantify the measurements results.
Mechanics – Kinematics. Dynamics and Newton’s laws of motion. Work and mechanical energy. Statics and elasticity. Oscillations.
Statics and dynamics of ideal fluids. Main concepts about real fluids.
Thermology – Temperature, heat and the laws of thermodynamics.
Electricity and magnetism – electric charge, electrostatic field and energy. Electric current. Static magnetic field and and magnetic forces. Time-dependent electric and magnetic fields.
Waves – General properties of waves. Sound waves. Electromagnetic waves. Reflection, refraction and transmission, waves interference and diffraction.
Radiation-matter interactions – Electromagnetic spectrum (IR, visible, X-rays, gamma-rays) and its interaction with different materials. Optical instruments. Color.
