Prerequisites

Major chemical characteristics of drugs of abuse, ethanol and psychoactive substances should be known. Basic knowledge about chromatographic and mass spectrometric methods is required
Learning outcomes

The aim of the course is to train the student about the toxicological analyses, on biological matrices, that are routinely performed in a Forensic Toxicology Lab
Course contents

The lessons are divided in three parts. The first part will focus on the role of the forensic toxicologist, the rules, the laws and all the regulations related to forensic toxicology: in particular, postmortem toxicology, drugs and driving issue, and workplace drug testing will be discussed in details. The second part will focus on the main molecules of forensic interest: traditional and new drugs of abuse, ethanol, psychoactive substances and volatile gases and poisons. The third part will describe all the analytical procedures related to toxicological analyses on biological matrices. In particular, chromatographic and mass spectrometric methods for the detection and quantification of molecules and metabolites in blood, urine and hair will be described in depth
Teaching methods

The lessons will be held by the lecturer and/or together with other specialists of forensic science.
