Applied Biology and Stem Cells:
knowledge of biological mechanisms related to the cell cycle (including mitosis and meiosis-spermatogenesis and oogenesis);DNA structure and replication, transcription, translation, apoptosis, shelter mechanisms.
Learning outcomes
The course will focus on the pathophysiology of male and female infertility and on assisted reproductive techniques. In particular, the endocrinological, genetic/epigenetic, immunological aspects of couple infertility will be discussed. Detailed insights into some diagnostic tests, such as semen analysis, IVF and ET technologies will be provided. At the end, students will acquire basic knowledge in Reproductive Medicine, including assisted reproductive techniques and related laboratory tests/analyses.

Biology: the student must know the basic mechanisms at a deeper level. Particular attention will be given to the regulation of the Cell Cycle and to the regulation of gene expression. The student must also be able to support and compare notions in the different areas of biology, finding common matrices.
Stem cells. The student will have to know the basic characteristics of stem cells (SC), compare these characteristics according to the origin of the cells (eg Embrionic stem Cells vs Adult Stem Cells). He will also have to know the therapeutic applications of the SC, clearly describing the limits. Particular attention will be given to Epigenetics and to the epigenetic characteristics peculiar to SC. Finally, the role of SC in the pathogenesis of tumors will be addressed.

Stem Cells

Articles and reviews from International scientific journals will be given by the teacher
Assessment methods
Written exam.

The exam consists of two written tests
BIOLOGY
11-13 closed questions (true / false) and about 2/3 open questions. Each question will be given a score (usually 6 points) and the final grade will be the proportional expression of the total score out of thirty (eg total score 81/90; grade 27).
The questions will focus on the topics covered in class.

STEM CELLS

3 Open questions (10 pts each).
The student will have to demonstrate not only the knowledge of the topics covered but also the ability to link them.
