Prerequisites
Classroom and online attendance, as well as the completion of all assignments are of the utmost importance. A minimum of 75% attendance is required.
Learning outcomes
The course aims to:
• develop essential communication skills in English so students are able to operate more efficiently in their professions (English language and communication skills);
• introduce the bases for the analysis of scientific printed, digital and video texts;
• introduce the bases to learn scientific-medical English by means of a vast range of genres;
• provide students with tools for self- learning.
Course contents
The course introduces the student to relevant medical English vocabulary, usage and functional language as well as elements of style and register found in medical texts. The course covers the main stages of medical communication and students will learn to master basic and specialist biomedical terminology in relation to specific thematic areas, namely: Anatomy and the Human Body (Unit 1, The Medical Alphabet); Acronyms and Abbreviations(Unit 1, The Medical Alphabet); Blood and Cardiology (Units 2 and 3, The Medical Alphabet); Diabetes; Endocrinology; Forensics (Units 4, 5, 6, The Medical Alphabet).
Teaching methods
1. Frontal lessons (first semester) - interactive, in class or using ZOOM.
2. On-line lessons (second semester) - using KIRO.
3. Google Forms (exercises, revision and tests to be carried out as self-learning and to prove online attendance).
Reccomended or required readings
Anna Loiacono (2013). The Medical Alphabet. An English textbook in healthcare. Vol. 1. Matarrese. Andria.
Assessment methods
The final exam at the end of the second semester is worth 3 CFU and consists in an oral test on the contents presented during the frontal and online lessons and on the contents of the book. Students can choose a topic from the book, relevant to their course of studies, and give an in-depth presentation during the oral test. Nobody is exempt from doing the exam. All students must show they have at least reached the B2.0 of the CEFR framework which is adopted in many professional and didactic contexts throughout Europe. The final mark is a pass ("idoneità"). There is a possibility that exams will be carried out online: all explanations will be given in due course.
