Prerequisites
The student must know the basic knowledge of anatomy, physiology and physics.
Learning outcomes
Knowledge of functional anatomy and biomechanics of the spine and limbs. Learn basic notions of kinesiology and biomechanics of normal upright stance and locomotion.
Course contents
Introduction to the course. Terminology. Classification of joints
Overview of the spine:
- General structure of vertebrae
- Intervertebral disk
- Global spine movements
Cervical spine:
- Features of the first 2 and last 5 vertebrae
- Ligaments and joints
- Muscles of the cervical spine
Dorsal spine:
- Vertebral features and interactions with the ribs
- Ligaments and joints
- Intrinsic and extrinsic muscles of the dorsal spine
- Respiratory muscles
Lumbosacral spine:
- Vertebral features
- Ligaments and joints
- Lumbosacral hinge
- Posterior and lateral muscles of the trunk
- Muscles of the abdominal wall
- Intradiscal pressures in different postures
- Handling of weights
- Intraabdominal pressure during lifting weights
Pelvis:
- Sacroiliac and sacrococcygeal joints, pubic symphysis
- Ligaments
- Muscle groups acting on trunk and pelvis
Seated, erect posture and voluntary movements of the trunk
Hip:
- Femoral head, acetabulum, capsule and ligaments
- Muscles acting on the hip
Knee:
- Tibiofemoral and patellofemoral joints, ligaments
- Muscles acting on the knee
Ankle and foot:
- Tibiotarsal, tibioperonal, subtalar, tarsal, metatarsophalangeal,
interphalangeal joints
- Muscles acting on the ankle and extrinsic and intrinsic muscles of the foot
- The plantar vault
Gait:
- General characteristics
- Gait cycle
- Time and space variables
- Joint and muscle actions
Shoulder joint complex:
- glenohumeral, subdeltoid, scapulothoracic, sternoclavicular, acromionclavicular joints and related ligaments
- Muscles acting on the shoulder
Elbow and forearm:
- Humerohulnar, humeroradial, radioulnar joints and related ligaments
- Muscles acting on the elbow
Wrist joint:
- Radiocarpal and midcarpal joints
- Muscle acting on the wrist
Hand:
- Carpometacarpal, metacarpophalangeal, interphalangeal joints
- Intrinsic and extrinsic muscles of the hand
Biomechanics:
- Principles of mechanics
- Biomechanics of balance

Teaching methods
The course is based on lessons with PowerPoint presentations, integrated by independent study of suggested texts or articles.

Assessment methods
Written exam made of 15 questions with multiple choice answers scored from 0 to 30. Correction is made just after the test and immediately communicated to the students.
