Prerequisites
Understanding of the basics of Anatomy, Physiology and Biochemistry are needed to better approch the course.
Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is the acquisition of the basic principles of General Pharmacology (Phaarmacokinetics, Pharmacodynamics) and Special Pharmacology, the understanding of drug classes directly and indirectly related to dental practice (their molecular mechanisms, pharmacodinamics and pharmacokinetics, and their therapeutic employment). Lastly the adverse reaction.
Course contents
GENERAL PHARMACOLOGY
Definition of Pharmacology and drug, active substance andexcipients.
Pharmaceutical forms.
Pharmacokinetics:
- definitions.
- passage of drugs through biological membranes.
-Absorption.
-bioavailability
-routes of administration.
-distribution and factors affecting distribution (organ perfusion and volume, ionization and pH, bond with plasma proteins).
Drug metabolism. Phase I and II. factors affecting drug metabolism: induction, inibition, genetic polymorphism.
Drug excretion and routes of elimination.
Pharmacodynamics: Drug mechanisms of action. Receptors. Molecular structure. receptor and drug interactions. Agonists and antagonists, allosteric modulators. Drug interactions. Drug discovery. Evidence-based medicine.
SPECIAL PHARMACOLOGY
Antibacterial agents.
Pain medications.
Anticoagulants.
Antidepressants and anxiolytics.
Statins.
Antihypertensives.
Antidiabetics.
Antineoplastics.
Teaching methods
Frontal lessons or on-line lessons (according to University of Pavia guidelines).
Reccomended or required readings
All the material necessary for the preparation of the student will be provided during the course.

Assessment methods
the exam will be a written test to verify the achievement of the educational objectives. Questions will be related to the topics covered during the lessons and under the program. Multiple choices test.
