Learning outcomes
The Biochemistry course aims to bring students into the structure-function relations of the macromolecules, with particular reference to the composition and main functions of tissues and oral fluid. In addition, the main metabolic pathways and their regulation at the molecular, cellular and tissue levels are given and, in order to provide students with the biochemical knowledge to be applied in dental practice, the topics are addressed by integrating chemical, physiological and pathological aspects of human biochemistry
Course contents
The main objectives of the course consist in the formation of students able to orient themselves in the vast discipline of Biochemistry by acquiring appropriate skills to understand and know how to describe:
1. CHEMICAL CHARACTERISTICS, FUNCTIONS, STRUCTURE AND METABOLIC ROLE OF MAJOR BIOMOLECULES (sugars, lipids, amino acids, proteins, nucleic acids, and their derivatives);
2. METABOLIC ENERGY PRODUCTION MECHANISMS AND ENVIRONMENTAL AND STRUCTURAL HOMEOSTASIS OF THE LIVING (General aspects, anabolism and catabolism, coupled reactions, high energy compounds, principles of bioenergetics, structure and function of ATP, production mechanisms The role of oxygen in metabolism ROS (production of oxygen reactive species and organism defense systems) Glutathione.
3. METABOLIC INTERRELATIONS WITH PARTICULAR REFERENCE TO BIO-MEDICAL INTERVALS (Metabolic Interactions between the various organs) Fast-feeding cycle, Hormone adjustment, Mechanism of action of protein hormones and steroids, The meaning of second messengers, Biochemical aspects of Human Diseases: Diabetes, Hypercholesterolemia, Cancer (Outbreaks), Extracellular Matrix).
4. COMPOSITION OF BONE AND TOOTH. Main components: collagen, proteoglycans and phosphoproteins. Dentin. Cement. Nail varnish. Organic Apatitis. THE SALIVA AND ITS FUNCTIONS. Establishment in organic and inorganic compounds. Salivary proteins. Saliva swab systems. BIOCHEMICAL ASPECTS OF DENTAL CARY AND PARADONTAL PATHOLOGY. Dental plaque and its metabolism. Prevention of diseases induced by the plaque. MOLECULAR ASPECTS OF THE TRANSFER OF TASTE.
Teaching methods
The course will take place with oral front lessons that will use multimedia systems. The teacher will be available during the course for appointment by e-mail ( visai.odontoiatria@unipv.it), to answer questions and to support the students during their training course, even with individual meetings.
