Knowledge of the structural and functional properties of proteins is required, with particular reference to enzymes.
Learning outcomes
Knowledge of the molecular mechanisms related to DNA duplication, gene transcription and protein synthesis.
The theoretical acquisition of basic molecular technologies and knowledge of their medical applications.
Course contents
The course includes the presence of a second lecturer on contract: Dr. Nora Bloise
1. Structure of DNA and RNA.
2. Eukaryotic genes, prokaryotes and human genome.
3. Propagation, conservation and variability of gene information (replication, repair and recombination).
4. Transfer of gene information into RNA (transcription) and maturation of transcripts.
5. Decoding of gene language into proteins (translation).
6. Regulation of gene expression.
7. Recombinant DNA technologies. Transgenic and knock out animals as a model of human diseases and for the study of gene function.
8. Applications of molecular biology in medicine.
