Prerequisites
In order to better follow the course, the student should have attended Human Anatomy, Biochemistry and Physiology.
Learning outcomes
The course aims to provide students with the cognitive and methodological tools needed to understand the taxonomy, structure, microorganism genetics, host-pathogen interaction, laboratory diagnostics and therapeutic and preventive strategies.
At the end of the course, the student should be able to know the main groups of strict and opportunistic pathogenic microorganisms and their microbiological characteristics. Students will be also able to understand the role of the Microbiology Laboratory in the diagnosis and prevention of human infections. Cariogenic and periodontogenic bacteria will be carried out in detail.
Students should be able to know how to apply the knowledge and skills acquired during the lectures to the understanding
of the molecular basis of infectious diseases and their treatments.
Course contents
The prokaryotic cell: molecular and functional aspects of the various structural components.
Host-parasite interactions: mechanisms of the pathogenic action of bacteria.
The genetic heritage of bacteria and its variability.
Antibacterial drugs: mechanism of action, mechanisms of resistance, methods for the evaluation of in vitro activity.
Diagnostic assessment of infection diseases. Collection and transport of pathological materials; direct and indirect approach (microscopic examination, culture test, identification, detection of microbial macromolecules, in vitro chemosensitivity tests; serological diagnosis)
Staphylococci, Streptococci, Mycobacteria, Enterobacteria, Pseudomonas and other oxidase-positive bacteria, Chlamydiae, Neisserie.
Microbiology of the oral cavity: the microbiota of the oral cavity, dental plaque, caries, cariogenic bacteria and periodontopathic bacteria.
Virus structure, classification and replication. Viral genetics.
Pathogenesis of viral infections. General principles of virological diagnostics.
Prions. Herpesvirus, Hepatitis virus, Retrovirus, Paramixovirus and Ortomixovirus, Picornavirus.
Teaching methods
The course is based on lectures, possibly supplemented by educational seminars.
There are no practical exercises.
Teacher is available for clarifications about the topics covered in class, by appointment to be booked (via email).
Students will be provided with didactic material used in class.

Assessment methods
The Microbiology examination consists of a written test (duration: 2 hours), structured in 6 open questions related to the main topics covered during the course. Each open question is worth 5 points.
The level of expository clarity, the synthetic ability and the language property will be evaluated.

The teacher will be available during the course for appointment by e-mail (francesca.zara@unipv.it), to answer questions and to support the students during their training course, even with individual meetings.
