Learning outcomes
The course aims to provide the knowledge necessary for the correct interpretation at the molecular level of biochemical phenomena object of future courses. The aim of the course is to provide the knowledge of the structures and chemical properties of simple biological substances and their polymers or aggregates (monosaccharides and their polymers; amino acids and proteins; lipids and their aggregates; nucleotides and nucleic acids). In addition to knowing the reactions and chemical principles, the aim of the course is to help the student to acquire the tools that allow him to study the biochemistry of complex systems independently.
Course contents
The knowledge acquired in the course of general chemistry is exploited for the understanding of the chemical properties of organic compounds.
Carbon chemistry: C hybridization, molecule geometry, isomerism.
Classification, structures and essential reactions of the various classes of organic compounds (aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons, alcohols, aldehydes, ketones, carboxylic acids, esters, amines). Various types of isomerism. Biological properties and chemical reactions of the following classes: carbohydrates, proteins, lipids and nucleic acids (structure: nature of bonds, polarity, stabilizing factors; transformations and reactions, including the formation reactions of biological polymers). The knowledge acquired during the course aims at providing a correct interpretation at the molecular level of the biochemical phenomena that will be object of the following courses.
Teaching methods
Lectures with the use of ppt. The lessons are weekly and last 2 hours each.
Tutorial classes are run in smaller groups to allow group discussion of lecture content and assessment, and presentation and debate on themes and concepts related to the course.
Tutoring is also provided to support the preparation of the final exam.
