Prerequisites
An understanding of the topics covered in the Chemistry course requires the student to have an understanding of the introductory knowledge of general chemistry taught in high school
Learning outcomes
This course is designed to provide the student with the fundamental chemical knowledge necessary to understand the mechanisms of biological systems.
Course contents
The program will include the following topics:
Atoms and Molecules. The structure of the atom. The elements and the periodic table.
The chemical bond: pure covalent, polar covalent, ionic; dative bond. Electronegativity. Intermolecular bonds.
Inorganic compounds: oxides, anhydrides, hydroxides, acids, salts. Brute formulas.
Solutions. Ways to express concentration. Colligative properties. Aqueous solutions: electrolytes and non-electrolytes.
Chemical equilibrium, Le Chatelier's principle and the equilibrium constant. The ionic product of water. The pH of a solution. Acids and bases: definitions, pH of their solutions. Strong acids and weak acids. Neutralization. Salt hydrolysis and amphoteric salts. The pH indicators. Buffer solutions.
Classification of chemical reactions: acid-base reactions and oxidation-reduction reactions.
Kinetic aspects of chemical reactions; the activation energy and the activated complex.
Thermodynamics: concept of free energy, enthalpy and entropy.
Teaching methods
Teaching is divided into lectures using ppt and classroom exercises.
A chemistry tutoring is also active to support students in the exam preparation
