Learning outcomes
The course aims to provide basic knowledge on differential and integral calculus, as well as on probability and statistics at the elementary level.
Course contents
Sets, set operations. Linear algebra. Vectors, lines and planes. Functions. Limits and continuity. Topics of differential and integral calculus. Concept of derivative and derivation rules. Maxima and minima of a function. Higher-order derivatives. Convex and concave functions. Indeterminate forms and asymptotes. The definition of integral. Main rules of integration. Basics on probability and statistics. Random variables. Distribution functions. Probability density. Mean and variance. Random variables with joint distribution. Models of probability. Applications. Models of growth (natural and logistics). Gravity and fall of bodies.
Teaching methods
The course consists of lectures, delivered through the aid of slides, and of guided exercises with examples that are useful for the comprehension of theoretical results.
Reccomended or required readings
One of the following books:
1) Vinicio Villani- Graziano Gentili, MATEMATICA PER DISCIPLINE BIOMEDICHE. McGraw-Hill
2) Vinicio Villani- Graziano Gentili, MATEMATICA: Comprendere e interpretare fenomeni delle scienze della vita. McGraw-Hill
Assessment methods
The assessment of the acquisition of the mathematical tools necessary to work on applications is made by means of regular written proofs during the teaching, and a final test, with exercises direct to applications, where the use of the mathematical tools is the end to achieve a precise numerical result.
