Prerequisites
A good knowledge of the main principles of general chemistry is required.
Learning outcomes
The students will acquire the skills necessary for the understanding of the structures, properties and reactivity of organic compounds and biomolecules that they often meet during their further studies.
Course contents
The aim of the course is to give the basic principles of organic chemistry through an overview on the structure and reactivity of the main classes of organic compounds: aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons, organic halides, alcohols, ethers, carbonyl compounds, amines, carboxylic acids and their derivatives. A special attention is dedicated to the stereochemical features of the compounds. Some of the most significant reaction mechanisms are described. An overview on the main classes of biomolecules, carbohydrates, aminoacids and proteins, nucleic acids, lipids, concludes the course.
Teaching methods
Lectures and tutorials.
