Prerequisites
A basic knowledge on General, Organic and Biological Chemistry is required.
Learning outcomes
Acquisition of basic knowledge regarding the structure and function of nucleic acids. Learning the basis of widely used
techniques for purification and analysis of proteins and expression of recombinant proteins.
Course contents
Study of cell constituents: techniques for tissue homogenization and separation of subcellular constituents.
Cell cultures. Production of monoclonal antibodies. Protein extraction methods from different tissues and fractional
precipitation. Main chromatographic techniques. Electrophoresis, isoelectrofocusing, western blotting.
DNA structure and replication. RNA structure, synthesis and maturation. Protein
biosynthesis. Control of genes expression in Prokaryotes. Extraction and purification of nucleic acids, use of restriction enzymes for genome analysis, cloning techiniques,
amplification of DNA by PCR. DNA sequencing. Expression of recombinant proteins.
Teaching methods
Teaching includes 16 hours of practicals with the aim of showing basic techniques for the study of proteins and DNA.
