Learning outcomes
The course provides basic knowledge in the geometric design, construction, management, and maintenance of transportation infrastructures such as roads, railways, and airports.
The contents and the methodology of the course are consistent with those of similar courses in the international context.

The student will develop the ability (1) to recognize the technical features of transportation infrastructures, and (2) to identify the theoretical background for the evaluation of their performance.
The student will be able to understand and critically interpret the design of a transportation infrastructure, with particular emphasis on the geometric, functional, and construction aspects.

The student will acquire the following skills:
• analysis of the transport demand at the design stage of the infrastructure and its main components;
• assessment of the interaction between drivers, vehicles, road and environment for the geometric design of roads, railways, and airports;
• knowledge of the main properties of materials employed for the construction of transportation infrastructures.
Course contents
1. Types of transportation infrastructures (roads, railways, airport) and their characteristics;
2. Organization of transportation networks, analysis of mobility demand, definition of capacity and quality of service;
3. Driver-vehicle-road-environment interactions;
4. Motion mechanics;
5. Fundamentals of geometric design;
6. Fundamentals of pavement and track structural analysis;
7. Materials and their main properties for the construction of transportation infrastructures.

An equal distribution between roads, railways and airports will be observed for all the topics.
Teaching methods
The course is organized in lessons and tutorials. Theoretical and technical concepts will be provided during lessors, while exercises will be developed to practically train students on calculations and design methods of transportation infrastructures.
