Learning outcomes
Mass media and technology are narrowly connected with the mechanisms of public opinion formation and both élite and citizens behaviour.
The aim of the course is giving students knowledge and tools in order to analyse (theories, concepts,
empirical research)and undestand the relationships between the processes of public opinion formation and the characteristics of the media. The course will put a prevalent focus on the Italian case in comparative perspective.
Course contents
The topics dealt with will be: public opinion and electoral competition; public opinion and democracy; polls, surveys and social media analysis; mass media and the technological revolution, politics on the media, media analysis, media consumption, electoral campaigns, 2018 and subsequent elections, the effect of the pandemic on political competition and public opinion.
Teaching methods
Mainly lectures, plus some tasks and discussions.
Reccomended or required readings
1) G. Legnante (a cura di), Dispensa su Opinione pubblica e media analysis. Edizione 2021-2022 (available at the CLU bookshop since the beginning of the course);
2) other texts which will be communicated at the beginning of the course and made available on Kiro.

Erasmus students are requested to agree upon the program (and possible text changes) with Prof. Legnante
Assessment methods
Written, articulated in tasks and questions (exams in the january-february session); Oral (subsequent sessions).
The exam aims at testing students' competence (substantively and methodologically) in analysing the relationship between the processes of public opinion formation and élite, media and citizens.
Attending students will also have the opportunity to carry out exercises and research which might (if positive) replace the exam.
