Learning outcomes
The course offers to the students a critical discussion of main theoretical and methodological skills needed for the realization of an empirical research within social and economic sciences. In particular, students' attention will be focalized on the construction of the research design from the starting hypothesis to their empirical control and to the communication of the results. At the end of course, students should be aware of the main fundaments of methods in social sciences, and they must be able to use them with the right critical and epistemological awareness. Besides they will achieve information on main currents within epistemological literature and so they will be aware of risks of over interpretation of data. Finally students will achieve basic skills for the implementation and the assessment of social and economic researches.
Course contents
The course will be organized in three parts. In the first will be discussed the concept of science and the scientific method, and presented the main methodological approaches in social science. In the second part will be discussed the fundamental concepts of the scientific process and the principal skills and instruments to project a research design. In the third part we will develop the instruments for collecting and analysing quantitative data.
Teaching methods
Lessons will be organized partly in a more traditional approach and partly in interactive relation and with exercises. If the health situation requires it, the lessons / exercises will be carried out only partially in the presence, however allowing students not present to use them through IT tools.
