Prerequisites
Understanding the topics covered in the Oncology module requires the student to have knowledge of human anatomy, in particular oral cavity and GI tract, physiology, general biology / pathology. They must also possess general concepts of epidemiology a pharmacology.
Learning outcomes
The course aims to provide the student with the essential notions for an overall evaluation of the diagnostic and therapeutic path of the cancer patient with particular reference to neoplasms and complications of treatments that impact on the nutritional status.
Course contents
-Epidemiology, risk factors and primary and secondary prevention.
-Diagnosis and general therapeutic approach to the cancer patient (medical therapy, radiotherapy, and cancer surgery).
-Main acute and late side effects of oncological treatments, and their impact on nutritional status.
-Role of the dietician in the multidisciplinary path of the cancer patient with particular reference to pathologies associated with an increased risk of malnutrition.
