Classroom and online attendance, as well as the completion of all assignments are of the utmost importance. A minimum of 75% attendance is required.

The course aims to develop the speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills required to communicate effectively in medical English, including to inquire, explain, prompt, rephrase, instruct, advise, recommend, investigate, interpret and discuss, as well as to research, summarize, record, and present relevant medical information.

The course introduces the student to relevant medical English vocabulary, usage and functional language as well as elements of style and register found in medical texts. The course covers the main stages of medical communication and students will:

- master basic and specialist biomedical terminology in relation to specific thematic areas, namely: Anatomy and the Human Body (Unit 1, The Medical Alphabet); Acronyms and Abbreviations(Unit 1, The Medical Alphabet); Blood and Cardiology (Units 2 and 3, The Medical Alphabet); Diabetes; Endocrinology; Forensics (Units 4, 5, 6, The Medical Alphabet);

- develop English language, communication and intercultural skills, in particular in relation to listening, reading, writing and discussion, within a CLIL (Content and Language integrated Learning) approach to biomedical knowledge and communication in society.

1. Frontal lessons, interactive, in class and using ZOOM.

2. On-line lessons using KIRO and other.

3. Assignments (self-learning).

The frontal lessons (either in class or using ZOOM) are a mixture of lecture and discussion and are taught in English by native English speakers. Online resources will be used to enhance instruction and students are expected to carry out some learning tasks autonomously outside of class time as part of their self-study programme. Details of the latter will be given at the beginning of the course.

The course examination, at the end of the 2nd semester, is a written test worth 4 CFU. It is designed to evaluate the student’s comprehension of the materials presented during the lessons. Students have to score 60 per cent (18/30) or higher to pass their exam. Successful students will be awarded an evaluation (excellent, very good, good, fair, pass, fail). There are no exemptions from taking the written examination. The materials presented during the lessons complement the subject matter of the Department of Medicine and Surgery. Consequently, no credit will be awarded for the completion of a similar course at another Department or institution nor for the holding of any certificate of English language proficiency. There is a chance that exams will be done online: all explanations will be given in due course.
