Prerequisites
Basic mathematics, chemistry and physics. Basic knowledge of the various university geological disciplines.
Learning outcomes
Acquisition of the concepts and tools necessary to perform a reservoir study and build a three-dimensional geological model of the subsoil that can be used to simulate the movement of fluids.
Course contents
Purpose of the course is to provide participants with the basics of reservoir studies, i.e. those multidisciplinary activities aimed at the physical characterization of reservoir rocks . We will go into detail on how to distribute these properties in the subsurface, providing complex structural and geological models to engineers for the simulation of subsurface fluid flows. These models can be used to describe aquifers, groundwater movements, hydrocarbon production, gas or CO2 storage, geothermal flows. The course also covers the technologies available for the characterization of fractured rocks and the assessment and management of uncertainty during a reservoir study. They will be also discussed the basic concepts of dynamic simulation of the fluids movements in the subsurface as well as some concepts of geomechanics (subsidence) and carbon dioxide capture and storage for sustainable development and for the reduction of greenhouse gases released into the environment.
Teaching methods
