Prerequisites
Basic knowledge of biochemistry and molecular biology. Knowledge of the general concepts about protein structure and function and cell metabolism.
Learning outcomes
The students must acquire the knowledge and the ability to describe the techniques and the strategies for the identification, the production and the characterization of recombinant enzymes, and for their uses in industry. THe students will also be able to describe the scientific and technical basis of monoclonal antibodies and recombinant proteins and their use as therapeutics and advanced diagnostics and a new class of drugs based on cells, so called Advanced Therapy medicinal products, that are contributing to the revolution of medicine of the future.
Course contents
Enzymes: structure, catalytic properties and mechanisms, elements of enzyme kinetic. Biochemistry of industrial enzymes: production, purification and characterization of proteins and enzymes. Methods and techniques for protein purification: centrifugation, dialysis, chromatography, electrophoresis. Measure of enzyme catalytic activity, protein quantification, specific activity. Enzyme assays and immunoassays. Enzymes in analytical biochemistry and diagnostics. Main families of industrial enzymes: biochemical features and relevance in industry. Practical applications of enzymes in the textile industry, in detergency and in the agro-food industries.
Monoclonal Antibodies: scientific and technical basis , generation, production, characterization, therapeutic and diagnostic applications. Enzyme Immuno Assay (ELISA), labelled antibodies for in vitro and in vivo diagnostics. Recombinant proteins : scientific and technical basis, development and production, purification, therapeutic and diagnostic applications. Cell-based drugs: Advanced Therapy medicinal products (cell and gene therapy, tissue engineering). Development and production, compliance with European regulation, therapeutic applications in patient specific therapy and personalized medicine.
Teaching methods
Frontal lessons, seminars held by experts in the field of the biotechnology, guided tours of production plants.
