Prerequisites
Classroom and online attendance, as well as the completion of all assignments are of the utmost importance. A minimum of 75% attendance is required.
Learning outcomes
The objective of this course is to provide future medical professionals with the necessary communication skills to provide effective patient care. Students will be introduced to medical genres and medical systems, relevant medical English vocabulary, usage and functional language, as well as elements of style and register found in medical texts. The course further covers the main stages of medical communication from the initial case-taking to medical examination, investigation, and diagnosis, plus medical and surgical treatment.
The first semester focuses mainly on written medical genres (medical articles, the IMRAD structure and the language involved: basic writing skills, paragraph structure, law of proximity; the printed page, its evolution and textual objects which are fundamental in scientific/medical writing: tables, charts, diagrams, etc.).
The second semester deals with doctor-patient relations, taking both oral and written genres into consideration (taking a patient's history, presenting complaint, types of doctor patient approaches, Medical Records, etc.).
Course contents
• Visual, written and spoken genres in medical contexts
• Scientific Writing
• Roles and relationships in medical communication

Written medical genres:
• organization of scientific/medical articles and their structure (the evolution of scientific writing; the IMRAD structure)
• the printed page and its evolution (the resource integration principle and the meaning compression principle in the scientific page; visual and verbal resources)
• presenting and analyzing data: the study of diagrams, tables and charts

Visual Genres:
• multimodal corpus linguistics and scientific animations, simulations

Doctor-patient relations:
• taking a patient’s history (importance of medical history / factors affecting success of the interview / first stages in taking a medical history - PC, HPC)
• managing Doctor-patient interactions (checkups, diagnosing, reporting)
• Medical Records (E-Health, M-Health, Telehealth, Patient Portals, Medical Records of the Past)
Teaching methods
1. Frontal lessons, interactive, in class and using ZOOM.
2. On-line lessons using KIRO and other.
3. Assignments (Google Forms - self-learning)

The frontal lessons (either in class or using ZOOM) are a mixture of lecture and discussion and are taught in English by native English speakers. Online resources will be used to enhance instruction and students are expected to carry out some learning tasks autonomously outside of class time as part of their self-study programme. Details of the latter will be given at the beginning of the course.

Assessment methods
The course examination, at the end of the 2nd semester, is an oral test worth 4 CFUs. It is designed to evaluate the student’s comprehension of the material/contents presented during the lessons. Specific details on the format and type of tasks included in the oral exam (such as group project work) will be discussed during lessons. Successful students will be awarded an evaluation (excellent, very good, good, fair, pass, fail). There are no exemptions from taking the oral examination.
The materials presented during the lessons complement the subject matter of the Department of Medicine and Surgery. Consequently, no credit will be awarded for the completion of a similar course at another department or institution nor for the holding of any certificate of English language competency.
There is a chance that exams will be done online: all explanations will be given in due course.
