Prerequisites
The course requires basic knowledge in chemistry (organic and inorganic chemistry), anatomy and biochemistry.
Learning outcomes
Basic knowledge about the composition, preparation, characterization and interaction with biological substrates of organic nanosystems intended for pharmaceutical applications. At the end of the course, the student shall be able to:
- describe the nanosystems illustrated and distinguish them on the basis of their composition, sizes, morphological and surface properties;
- illustrate the methods and the techniques used respectively for the synthesis and characterization of nanosystems;
- understand the formulation strategies used for drug loading and delivery according to the therapeutic target.
Course contents
Organic nanosystem classification (polymeric nanoparticles; polymeric micelles; nanofibers; liposomes; solid lipid nanoparticles, SLN; nanostructured lipid carriers, NLC). Synthesis and preparation methods. Technological (size, morphology, superficial properties) and biopharmaceutical (drug loading, drug delivery, cellular uptake) characterization. Biomedical applications and administration routes. Nanosystem fate and toxicity after administration.
Teaching methods
Theoretical lessons. There are no practical exercises. The required frequency is 75% of the hours provided.
Reccomended or required readings
Aulton's Pharmaceutics: the design and manufacturing of medicines 5th Edition (M.E. Aulton, K. Taylor), Elsevier, 2018
Assessment methods
Final written examination focused on the program of the whole course (modules 1 and 2). The exam will evaluate the level of learning achieved by the student on the contents of the lectures, the reference text and the proposed literature will be evaluated.
