Learning outcomes
DEVELOPMENTAL AND STEM CELL BIOLOGY
The course aims at enabling students to obtain an integrated view of cell function depending on the degree of differentiation and to investigate the processes by which genes regulate cellular activities during cytodifferentiation and development.
Course contents
DEVELOPMENTAL BIOLOGY
Sex Determination. Spermatogenesis and oogenesis. Fertilization and pre-implantation embryonic development. Manipulation techniques of gonads, gametes and embryos and in vitro fertilization. Embryonic Genome Activation. Genomic imprinting. Cloning. Gastrulation.

BIOLOGY OF STEM CELLS
Definition. Sources. Properties. Niches. Embryonic stem cells. Stem cells from somatic tissues. Plasticity of stem cells. Cellular reprogramming. The stem cells in regenerative medicine and tissue engineering.
Teaching methods
Lectures and seminars.

No educational or tutored seminars are planned.
Reccomended or required readings
Giudice et al. Biologia dello Sviluppo, Piccin Editore, 2010, or other books of Developmental Biology. Slides of the lessons will be given.
Assessment methods
The exam is written and includes two open questions: one for the development biology module and one for the stem cell biology module to which the student will have to answer in full.
Further information
The teacher is available for clarification on the contents of the lessons following appointment.
