Department
DEPARTMENT OF CHEMESTRY
Curriculum
PERCORSO COMUNE
Period
2nd semester (01/03/2022 - 17/06/2022)
Lesson hours
36 lesson hours
Prerequisites
Having attended the Laboratory of Organic Chemistry I
Learning outcomes
The course aims to deepen the experimental aspect of Organic Chemistry, completing the basic knowledge acquired previously with regard to the synthesis and experimental techniques.
Course contents
This objective will be achieved through laboratory experiences that use synthetic reactions learned in theoretical courses. The student will be directed to the evaluation of all aspects of a synthesis (optimization of yields, analysis of products with modern experimental techniques, safety of operations, etc.). Moreover it will explained how access to bibliographic information trough chemical databases
Here is reported the list of lab experiments:
• Preparation of ethyl (E)-4-methoxy-cinnamate-esters by Horner–Wadsworth–Emmons reaction between 4-methoxy-benzaldeyde and trimethyl phosphoacetate in aqueous solvent
• Reduction of Camphor to Borneol using Sodium Borohydride or Sodium metal
• Nifedipine synthesis through Hantzsch reaction.
• Photochemical reaction of Nifedipine monitored by HPLC analysis.
• Aldol reaction between 2-acetylpiridine and 4-nitrobenzaldehyde
• Synthesis of triphenylcarbinol by Grignard reaction between phenyl magnesium bromide and methyl benzoate.
• Friedel-Crafts acylation of methylbenzene
• Nitration of bromobenzene
The reactions are monitored by TLC and the products are characterized by spectroscopic IR, NMR or UV-Vis analysis.
