FRANCESCONI ALBERTO (titolare) - 9 ECTS
Prerequisites
No special requirements are mandatory. However, since Organization Theory and Design has interdisciplinary traits, it is useful to harness the knowledge and skills acquired in the business economy, in the legal and economic areas of the first and second years of the undergraduate degree courses, in particular the contents of the characterizing course "ECONOMIA E GESTIONE DELLE IMPRESE".
Basic Business Organization knowledge is very useful and preparatory as well as the very basic computer skills (e.g. ECDL).
Learning outcomes
The course develops themes of analysis and design of information system (IS) according to a predominantly organisational perspective. Mini case-studies, videos, business testimonies, live demo, etc. are used to support the conceptual and methodological approaches with regard to traditional and most innovative IS, trying to develop a critical spirit and autonomy of judgment (thus avoiding simpler ICT determinism). A further aim is to develop practical skills of analysis and governance, with particular attention to organizational and strategic relevance (eg. Organizational change) exploiting examples and testimonies (Dublin descriptors 1, 2 & 3). Last but not least, it is intended to facilitate a student's insertion into a firm by developing both a sensitivity and a "grammar" linked to IS to enhance the ability to learn and communicate (Dublin descriptors 4 & 5).
Course contents
First module (6 and 9 CFUs)
• IS, IT, information and organisation needs
• The CIO and the historical IT development
• IS and organisational structure
• Classifications of IS and business processes
• The integration of IS (intra and inter-organisational levels)
• IS and degree of change
• 'Make or buy' of IS.

Second module (only 9 CFUs)
• IT evolution, new trends and implications for organisations and IS
• Learning, innovation and information 'external' sources, data as a strategic resource;
- On-line reputation
• The role of on-line communities
• IS and strategic decisions.
Teaching methods
Lectures, videos, mini case-studies, business testimonials (managers, entrepreneurs, etc.), exercises and/or workgroups, live demo, to support both frontal and interactive didactics, with analysis and problem solving elements. Together with the classroom can be scheduled an ongoing learning test.
Reccomended or required readings
6 CFU
- Francesconi A., 2011, I sistemi informativi nell’organizzazione d’impresa, A. Giuffré (Chapter 7 excluded)

9 CFU
- Francesconi A., 2011, I sistemi informativi nell’organizzazione d’impresa, A. Giuffré (tutto)
- Dossena C., 2012, Reputazione, apprendimento e innovazione nelle imprese: il ruolo delle online community, F. Angeli (Chapters 3, 4 and 5)
- Any additional material suggested by the lecturer or uploaded on the e-learning service "KIRO"
Assessment methods
A written exam (an hour and a quarter) with multiple questions both to evaluate the knowledge and understanding of the topics discussed (concepts, models, exercises and testimonies, "IS's grammar" etc.) and to evaluate the contextualization capacity by requesting relevant arguments and exemplifications. Together with the students can be scheduled an ongoing learning test
connected to exercises, project works and seminars. In case of
intermediate tests the final mark corresponds to the sum of all marks.
The lecturer can make mandatory the oral examination in special cases, even individual (e.g. for incorrect behavior, suspicious copying cases, etc.). The results of any intermediate tests will be posted through the
"KIRO" e-learning platform; the results of the final exam will be published
in the student's reserved area.
Further information
Detailed program, slides, materials and information are progressively uploaded on KIRO platform, accessible by students with their university credentials
