Prerequisites
Basic concepts of biology (what a cell is) and genetics.
Learning outcomes
Understanding of the molecular mechanisms of genetic exchange among soil microorganisms and how these phenomena have an impact on the environmental niche.
Course contents
The microbial world: viruses, bacteria and fungi.
Basis of microbial genetics.
Genetic exchanges: gene transfer processes and mechanisms.
Horizontal gene transfer in environmental niches and evolution.
Metagenomics: culture-independent approaches to microbial ecology.
Teaching methods
Lectures given with the help of power point slides and explanations at the
blackboard; supplementary material will be available on the KIRO
platform together with links to web sites or scientific articles topic-specific.
Reccomended or required readings
None. Necessary documentary material will be made available through Kiro.
Assessment methods
Oral exam with the presentation of a scientific article.
