Learning outcomes
The workshop aims at providing students with some tools to orient themselves in the world of work and professions, introduce them to the knowledge of the communication professions and their recent transformations, and to explore some cultural, ethical and practical aspects of these professions.
Course contents
The laboratory is divided into three parts.
The first part offers concepts, tools, information and examples useful for getting to know the world of work and professions and to participate in it more consciously by addressing the following topics: work and the division of labor, the labor market, the quality of work, occupations, professions and job transformations.
In the second part, the different types of writing used in the production of media and journalistic content will be analyzed, with particular attention to "press agency" writing, its rules and its communicative logic. The theoretical moment will be regularly accompanied by laboratory exercises that will allow students to put their acquisitions into practice.
The third part will deal with the issue of prejudices and stereotypes, their socio-cognitive function and their improper use within communication.
Teaching methods
The first part, coinciding with the first weeks of the course, consists of lectures with class discussion.
The second part and the third part will be carried out at the same time by alternating frontal lessons with practical exercises led by the teacher. The activities of the laboratory are intended to enhance the direct or indirect experience that students have of work and the knowledge they have of the world of work and professions.
Study materials, readings and bibliographic indications will be made available on the KIRO page dedicated to the laboratory
Reccomended or required readings
To participate in the laboratory and prepare for the exam, students will have various materials available:
1) a short handout on the first part dedicated to work and professions;
2) a short handout on the second part dedicated to journalistic writing and, in particular, to press agency writing;
3) the volume "Prejudices and stereotypes", by Paola Villano, Carocci Editore.
Assessment methods
Student assessment is divided into 2 stages:
1) a short written test on the first part of the laboratory consisting of a test with multiple choice questions; 2) a written test including a practical exercise and a test with multiple choice questions.
