Prerequisites
Good knowledge of the Italian language. Basic knowledge of the history of the late ancient and medieval world
Learning outcomes
Basic knowledge of the main characters of Byzantine history and civilization; analysis of the fundamental topics related to the political, economic, religious and military development of the Byzantine State.
Course contents
The main features of Byzantine civilization. The New Rome and her neighbours: war and culture in the Byzantine world. Civil and military power in Byzantium: a millennium of necessary but uneasy partnership.
Teaching methods
Lectures. Literary and documentary sources (in Italian translation) will be analyzed; iconographic sources will be made available through PowerPoint.

Assessment methods
Oral examinations. Students will be asked to discuss at least one of the main problems of Byzantine civilization and at least one of the sources which have been read and commented during the lessons
Further information
Byzantine sources in Italian translation will be made available by the teacher. Students who can't attend the lessons are requested to contact the teacher in order to arrange an alternate program
