Basic knowledge of the main topics and problems related to the art of war in the Greek and Roman world
Course contents
The evolution of infantry from phalanx to legion. The Peloponnesian War: competing strategies, evolving tactics
Teaching methods
Lectures. Ancient Greek and Latin literary sources will be read and commented in Italian translation; iconographic sources will be made available through PowerPoint

Assessment methods
Oral examinations. Students will be asked to discuss at least one of the major problems related to the art of war in the ancient world (8th C. BC - 4th C. AD) and one of the sources read and commented during the lessons
Further information
Ancient sources will be read and commented in Italian translation. Students who can't attend the lessons are requested to contact the teacher in order to arrange an alternate program
