Prerequisites
No special requirements are mandatory. However, since Organization Theory and Design has interdisciplinary traits, it is useful to harness the knowledge and skills acquired in the business economy, in the legal and economic areas of the first and second year of 3 years undergraduate degree courses, as well as within the characterizing course "ECONOMIA E GESTIONE DELLE IMPRESE".
Learning outcomes
The Course provides basic organizational knowledge and models necessary to understand the complexity of the organizational phenomenon in multiple contexts (e.g. small, medium and big firms in different industries, in public and/or private sector, etc.) as well as the development of practical skills of designing with a critical spirit and autonomy of judgment (macro and micro forms and mechanisms for co-ordination of work and to interpret and / or influence human behavior within firms - Dublin descriptors 1,2 & 3). The Course aims also at an easier insertion of students into the labour market by developing both sensitivity and basic organizational "grammar" to enhance the ability to communicate and learn (Dublin descriptors 4 & 5); moreover, specific lessons will be delivered on Soft Skills, Career Management Skills and Self-Awareness, in such a way that the student will be able to recognize individual strengths and weaknesses, job aspiration, and to be more aware about future job profiles, transition learning and decision making.
Course contents
- Organizational behaviour of individuals and groups.

- Soft Skills, Career Management Skills and Self-Awareness.

- Contextual dimensions (including the environment) in their multiple components.

- Organizational relationships, both internal and external, and transactions, including their governance structures.

- Organizational forms (craft forms and peer groups, functional, divisional, geographical, matrix, horizontal, network, adhocracy, hybrid, etc.) and operating systems.

- Organizational design at micro level (job design and redesign, the role of professionals and knowledge workers, recent trends, etc.).
Teaching methods
Lectures, videos, mini case-studies, business testimonials (managers, entrepreneurs, etc.), role playing or workgroups, project works and/or seminars, to support both frontal and interactive didactics, with problem analysis and problem solving elements (if permitted by the health situation; alternatively, the lectures / exercises will be carried out only partially in presence, however allowing students not present to use them through IT tools).
Reccomended or required readings
- Costa G., Gubitta P., Pittino D., (2014->), Organizzazione aziendale. Mercati, gerarchie e convenzioni, McGraw-Hill, Milano (chapters indicated by the teacher)
- Any supplementary material indicated by the teacher on the website and/or on "KIRO" e-learning platform.
Assessment methods
A written exam of 1.5 hours with multiple questions both to assess knowledge and understanding of organizational complexity (concepts, models, "organizational grammar", etc.) as well as practical skills to design forms and organizational mechanisms through a practicle exercise. This exercise simulates an organizational problem of medium complexity. It can be 'solved' through the (re)design along with the argumentation of further assumptions and choices made autonomously by the student. Indeed, the problem presented does not require a unique possible solution. The resolution of the "organizational problem" presented weighs 10 points out of the total of 30.
Together with the classroom can be scheduled an ongoing learning test connected to exercises, project works and seminars. In the case of intermediate tests the final mark corresponds to the sum of all marks.
The lecturer can make mandatory the oral examination in special cases, even individual (e.g. for incorrect behavior, suspicious copying cases, etc.). The results of any intermediate tests will be posted through the "KIRO" e-learning platform; the results of the final exam will be published in the student's reserved area.
Further information
Detailed program, slides, materials and information are progressively uploaded on KIRO platform, accessible by students with their university credentials
