Prerequisites
Basic knowledge of Microbiology, referring in particular to the structure of the bacterial cell.
Learning outcomes
The course provides to the students the knowledge about the phenotypic susceptibility testing and molecular methods using in laboratories of Microbiology to typing Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. The course provides also insights into antibiotic resistance mechanisms applied in clinical setting and epidemiological aspects.
Course contents
Interaction of antimicrobial agents and the human host.
Selective toxicity;
interaction of antimicrobial agents and the microorganism.
Classification of antimicrobial agents: bacteriostatic or bactericidal, for the type of target, for chemical structure.
Resistance to antibiotics: microbiological resistance;
acquired resistance;
Pharmacology intrinsic microbiological and clinical breakpoints; the genetic basis of resistance; mobile genetic elements: plasmids and transposons.

Transferability of antibiotic resistance genes: conjugation, transduction and transformation.

Antibiotic resistance mechanisms:
modification of target; modification of permeability; enzyme production; efflux pumps. Resistance mechanisms to beta-lactams, fluoroquinolones, glycopeptides, aminoglycosides, macrolides.
Development prospects for finding new antibiotics.
Concept of multidrug- and/or pan-resistance applied to the clinical setting.
Epidemiology of antibiotic resistance: resistance genes and clones transmissibility.
