Learning outcomes
Work is a basic element of both social and individual life. Using different theoretical approaches and results of empirical research from the social sciences, lessons are designed to provide useful tools (concepts, definitions, explanatory models, indicators) for studying work, its various aspects and its change in contemporary societies. At the end of the course students should demonstrate to know some basic concepts (e.g. work, labour, employment, occupations, industry, profession, labour market, flexibility, technology), and some indicators (e.g. participation rate, employment rate, unemployment rate), to be able to distinguish different forms of work, and to be able to point out some of the factors transforming work and employment.
Course contents
The course is divided into three parts:
1. What is work, how it is divided and distributed, how to study work and workers;
2. Relevant aspects of work: forms of work and employment; producing goods or services; differences and inequalities in work and employment;
3. The transformation of work: the impact of globalization and technological change on todays and future jobs.
Teaching methods
The course includes both lectures and educational activities organized in "discussion forums" with the participation of students. Lessons and forums aim at valorizing students' experiences and knowledge of the world of work. Study materials, readings and references will be made available on the course's KIRO page.
Reccomended or required readings
Handouts will be provided by the teacher. Other readings for discussion forums and for the examination will be given at the beginning of the lessons.
