Learning outcomes
The course will provide basic knowledge on plant genetic resources and on main conservation methods (in /ex situ). Objective 1: to provide base knowledge for making research and practical activities in the field of restoration ecology with a special focus on agri-ecosystems; objective 2: to provide the required knowledge for monitoring threatened species; objective 3: hands-on activities on threatened species both in the field and lab.
Course contents
This course provides theoretical and hands-on activities on seed curation, seed storage and restoration ecology for threatened species with a focus on agri-ecosystem, where threats to the native flora are particularly strong. The course is organized in two modules of 3 ECTS each, including frontal lectures and hands-on activities at the germplasm bank, at the germination laboratory, at the Botanical Garden and in the field.
Module 1. The student will be provided with basic knowledge of plant genetic resources (eg. what they are, why they are important). The module will describe the main ex situ conservation methods and techniques.
Module 2. The student will be provided with basic knowledge of restoration ecology and the links with professional activities. The students will be involved in some of the ongoing restoration projects carried out by DSTA of the University of Pavia in the local area.
Teaching methods
Lecture; laboratory; field excursions; seed banking activities in the seed bank
