The student should know basic Pathology and Head and Neck Anatomy.
Learning outcomes
The goal of the Course is to teach the training Dentists the Plastic surgey related diseases affecting the lower third of the face: treatment limits and opportunities, with a particular attention to the edge between the Physician and the Dentist activities. During the first lessons the biological and anatomical basis of the peculiar plastic surgery techniques are presented; thereafter the big grouping pathologies are discussed: trauma, tumors,degenerative diseases, malformations. A special attention is payed to the current cosmetic medical procedures.
Course contents
Plastic surgey definition. Wound healing and scars. Sutures. Microsurgery. Grafts. Regenerative medicine and surgery. Transplants and flaps. Implants. Burns. Face soft tissues trauma. Difficult to heal wounds and sores. Skin tumors. Face and mouth reconstruction. Skin vessels pathology. Facial palsy.
Face congenital malformations. Cosmetic medicine and surgery of the lips and perioral area.
Teaching methods
Traditional classes with projection of clinical images.
Theorethical parts of the lessons are uploaded on KIRO web portal a few days before each class, to let the students understand throughly the clinical parts.
Attending a closed number course on suture techniques is suggested.

Assessment methods
The exam is oral and is based upon the whole program. When preparing the exam, the student should refer to both the lessons and the textbook. The oral dissertation is based on the effective approach to a clinical case, it should be organized with logical order moving from the general to the particular and it should be supported by solid arguments, in a correct Italian language with the appropriate use of medical terminology.
