Prerequisiti
The knowledge of basic concepts of bacteriology, virology and parasitology, as well as of human anatomy, physiology and immunology are required to fully appreciate the pathogenetic bases of diseases sustained by microbes, the host response and the relevant diagnostic algorithms.
Obiettivi formativi
The course, although limited in credits, will provide the students with a methodologic approach to recognize and diagnose the etiology of infectious diseases, interact with colleagues and procedures in diagnostic labs and set-up simplified treatment approaches (with a special focus on mechanisms of drug resistance, a clinical approach to suspect them and potential rescue treatment strategies). Concepts developed during this course will be propaedeutic to the following courses of Infectious Diseases.
Programma e contenuti
Diagnostic algorithms to identify the etiology of diseases sustained by microorganisms (bacteria, viruses, parasites and fungi) will be sistematically discussed by apparatus (neurologic, respiratory, gastro-intestinal, epato-pancreatic, urinary, reproductive, disseminated infections, infections in immunocompromised hosts etc.), including elements of the clinical and instrumental work-up (signs and symptoms, imaging, biochemical parameters), elements of the microbiology work-up (timing of sampling, biologic matrices, culture assays, molecular assays, serology assays, drug resistance assessment, etc.) and elements of differential diagnosis with non-infectious conditions.
Metodi didattici
Interactive lessons.
Testi di riferimento
A detailed slide set will be provided for each lesson, and a list of suggested readings will be included in each slide set.
