Prerequisiti
English language proficiency level at the B1+ level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
Obiettivi formativi
This course is aimed at students enrolled in the fifth year of the Master’s degree in Architectural Engineering, as well as Civil Engineering Erasmus+ incoming students and is part of the Becoming a Global Digital Engineer (BADGE) EU-funded research project (https://www.thebadgeproject.eu)
The aim is to develop in students technical communication skills in a digital environment and oral presentation skills in English, with special emphasis on some of the genres of specialised and professional communication, such as project descriptions, project proposals for design competitions and reports.
On successful course completion, students will be able to:
- choose and use technical jargon appropriate to the architecture and construction sectors;
- present their own architecture projects in front of a mixed audience of specialists and lay-public;
- prepare an architectural walkthrough of their own projects incorporating appropriate multimodal discourse.
Programma e contenuti
Course title: English for Architecture, Design and Construction Professionals.
Course description: Design and construction professionals spend a large part of their professional lives writing and talking about their projects, and yet most architects and engineers are not professional writers nor professional communicators.
This course aims to introduce students to technical communication in English with a focus on the kinds of documents architects routinely have to prepare in their professions. The types of documents considered include design journals, technical specifications and reports, project descriptions and proposals for design competitions, architectural walkthroughs.
The course is intended as a lab during which students can develop language and communication skills by practicing vocabulary and grammar, pronunciation and project presentation skills.
Metodi didattici
Webinars with guided activities, guest talks, students’ presentations and lab-work, task-based assignments. Attendance is strongly advised.

Modalità verifica apprendimento
At the end of the course students will be evaluated on a max. 10-minute oral presentation of one of their projects. Using a two-point Pass or Fail grading scale, a Pass corresponds to full mastery of the conventions of multimodal architectural discourse introduced and practised during the course, including clear pronunciation, appropriate vocabulary and adequate communication skills.
