Prerequisites
A pre-requisite is the knowledge of Anatomy, Physiology, Medical Semiotics and of the major medical sub-specialties. Preferable to have already attended internal medicine wards.
Learning outcomes
Main objective of the course is to make the student able capture - by analysing the medical history and by performing physical examination - the diagnosis and propose a therapeutic approach of the most common diseases in the elderly on the basis of prior acquired knowledge of pathophysiology. A focus on multimorbidity and frailty, and how to measure them, will also be included. End-of-life issues, palliative care, and healthy aging will also be addressed.
Course contents
Gerontology: the biology of aging; theories of aging; aging physiology of organs and systems; demographic aspects of senility.
Geriatrics: health and care organization elderly; Elder overall assessment: multidimensional assessment of self-sufficiency; Nutrition and Elder malnutrition; The fragility,immune alterations in aging; the most common cardiovascular diseases of the elderly; the most common elder respiratory diseases; the most common digestive diseases of the elderly; Constipation, the most common endocrine diseases of the elderly; the senile diabetes and its complications; the elder bone disease: osteoporosis and osteomalacia; falls. the elder cognitive disorders: dementia, cognitive deficits, delirium, normal pressure hydrocephalus, of affective disorders and depression in the elderly, the syndrome of immobilization; the hypokinetic syndrome, the pressure sores, fluid and electrolyte balance disorders in the elderly, dehydration, Outline of the sleep disorders in the elderly, the elder physical restraint, the pain and the elderly palliative care, Parkinson's disease , genito-urinary system and signs of urinary incontinence, urinary tract infections, prostatic hypertrophy; LEVELS OF SERVICE IN Geriatrics: network models in helping the elderly, the general problems of pharmacotherapy in old age. Indication for palliative care and palliative care pathways.
Teaching methods
Lessons, seminars, rotations in geriatrics/internal medicine wards. Some lessons will focus on clinical cases.

Assessment methods
Oral examination. The exam will focus on the discussion of a clinical case in the geriatric field, where the student must demonstrate the ability to carry out correct and fluent clinical reasoning to reach the diagnosis easily and appropriately. In addition to technical knowledge, the ability to critically analyze the case, the appropriate use of medical terminology, and the basics of pharmacological treatment of the main internal medicine-geriatric conditions will also be assessed.
The final grade for the entire course will take into account the average of the grades obtained, weighted by the number of credits.
