Prerequisites
Understanding clinical toxicology presupposes adequate knowledge of human anatomy and physiology and general pharmacology concepts.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course, the student should be able to:
(a) describe and interpret the manifestations induced by exposure to toxins, environmental pollutants and drug overdose, and implement appropriate preventive and therapeutic measures.
(b) describe and interpret the manifestations induced by drug and drug abuse and drug and drug dependence and implement appropriate preventive and therapeutic measures against these conditions.
(c) know about antidotes, their use and the functions of Poison Control Centers and clinical toxicology laboratories.
Course contents
General guidelines for management of the poisoned patient.
Intoxications induced by drugs, caustics, insecticides, herbicides, rodenticides, carbon monoxide, mushrooms, plants and animal toxins.
Intoxications from alcohol and old and new substances of abuse.
Intoxications in special situations (childhood and elderly).
Addiction. Interactions and adverse drug reactions.
Teaching methods
The course consists of classroom lectures with clinical case practice. Lecturers during office hours are available for clarification on the topics covered in the course.

Assessment methods
The examination is oral and covers the listed topics related to the different modules into which the course is divided. The student must demonstrate that he/she has achieved the formative objectives of the course.
The final grade will be the weighted average of the tests on the achievement of the training objectives related to the topics of the different modules.
