Prerequisites
No special prerequisites are required, however, since the discipline is related to the tradition of medieval texts, it is useful to know the medieval Latin literature.
Learning outcomes
The course provides information on the history of the main book forms from the Greek-Roman antiquity to the Renaissance with reference to the various materials used (wood, papyrus, membrane, paper) and the typologies of the book (tabula, roll, code).
By the end of the course, the student will have to know the history of the ancient book in the change of forms and materials; he will master the technical terminology, and know the specific bibliography.
Course contents
History and formation of the manuscript book. During the course, the various forms of the manuscript book from the Greco-Roman Age to the Renaissance and the materials used in the various ages to make it are examined. The course includes lectures and practice sessions held at the State Library of Cremona. Non-attending students are required to agree with the teacher an alternative program.
Teaching methods
The course provides lessons and practice sessions held on the manuscripts at the State Library of Cremona.
Practice sessions in the library pursue the goal of illustrate concrete material aspects of the manuscript book in order to describe them. For the relevance of the practical aspect of the discipline, attendance is particularly recommended to all students.

Assessment methods
Oral examination to assess the skills acquired by the student, who will know forms and material aspects of the manuscripts. He will also demonstrate to describe them, thus proving that they have achieved the course objective.
