Prerequisites
A general knowledge of the history and cultures of the Middle Ages is required. Knowledge of the main characters and events of the Old and New Testament.
Learning outcomes
The role and purpose of images during the Middle Ages. Artistic cultures of Europe and Eastern Mediterranean. A special case to be examined: iconography of the devil and his associates.
Course contents
Images of Satan, the devils and the possessed. Saints Franciscans of the thirteenth century.
Student research: each student presents a report on a work of art depicting a story of a saint or saint. Discussion and interventions for integration and explanation of the teacher.
Lectures by teachers: A. Riccomini (Greek-Roman art), A. Ricci (medieval history), E. Mosconi (cinema), Luca Bagetto (philosophy), E. Rocconi (classical theater), Don A. Piccinelli ( demonologist, episcopal seminary of Lodi).
Teaching methods
Lessons by the teacher. Oral papers by students. Written papers on the topic of the oral paper. (second trimester; senior students only). Lessons of other professor (from the department and other institutions).

Assessment methods
Presentation of papers. Oral exam.
The final vote is based upon:
- discussion during the lessons;
- a written paper to be given to the teacher the last days of the course (senior students only);
- final oral exam.
