Mineralogy: chromophore elements; Color of minerals; Crystallographic Optics; Isomorphic substitutions; Mineralogical Systematics
Learning outcomes
Recognition by means of fiso-optical measurements of mineral bud quality, colour characterization (natural or induced), synthesis discrimination from natural gems.
Description of the chemical, physical and genetic characteristics of the main gem families.
Preparation of a gemmological laboratory.
Course contents
Gem definition. Natural and synthetic gems. Imitations, improvement treatments.
Physical properties of Gems. Chemical properties. Certification of colourless and coloured gems.
Instruments of a gemmological laboratory. The gemological cards. Systematic gemological: Diamond; Corundum Beryls Tourmalines Amber Opals Zirconia, Turquoise.
Italian gems.

Frontal lessons and laboratory exercises with natural and synthetic gems

Written examination with 3 open questions on geological systematics learned in lecture; Chemical and physical properties of gems; Certification of diamonds and color gems.
Laboratory test: gemmological Board of 2 gems having the same colour and different chimism (e.g. yellow corunone and Citrine Quartz)
