Learning outcomes
The course aims to offer the necessary supports to identify and analyze the different types of restoration in the field of Western culture and to verify that only specific "artefacts" were, until a few years ago, the subject of restoration.
Although in the field of violin making the problem of restoration did not arise until about the 70s of the last century, we note that the maintenance or transformation of the instruments was functional to the needs of composers, instrumentalists and the environments in which music was performed.
Therefore, we are faced with the problem of how to deal competently with the safeguarding of the instruments arrived to us.
Moreover, one wonders what possibilities exist today in order to trace a story that allows to face the problem.
In this regard, students will be asked to identify which surveys allow us today to trace a historical path.
While verifying which type of intervention the musical instrument has undergone, the problem of the congruence of the competences in favor of an intervention that safeguards its identity is faced.
Course contents
Semantic and cultural value of the term "restoration".
Analysis of restoration methods in the long term of the pre-restoration and their theorization.
Proto-restoration and historicism (from the second half of the 18th century to the beginning of the following century).
History and theories of restoration from the 19th century to the 20th century.
Students are asked to hypothetically apply the different concepts of restoration to musical instruments. The aim is to verify how restoration interventions are subordinated to the theories that support the project.
Teaching methods
Frontal lessons. Debate to identify what was really understood during the lessons.
Comparison between the different forms of art and culture (subject to restoration interventions) and the art of violin making.
The student will be asked to report any problem of understanding during the lesson. Similarly, the student must report the difficulties encountered. The aim is to be able to provide concrete support to the study.
Reccomended or required readings
Since the subject has been the subject of numerous investigations, the texts have different aims and above all never refer to the restoration of stringed instruments. In order to avoid unnecessary loss of time and, above all, dispersion in the study for the student, the teacher will give useful information after the lesson. Any bibliographic indications, for the students’ particular interests, will be given for a personal study.
Together, theoretical and historical themes will be analyzed that allow an approach to violin making contextual to the program. This study will be shared.
Assessment methods
Exercises, oral exam.
Further information
Since in the CFU system the frequency is an integral part of the training course, the students unable to attend the lectures are invited to contact as soon as possible the teacher for the necessary complements to the program.
