Prerequisites
The exam in Harmony and Music Analysis 1 is required as well as analytical skills of classical repertoire with attention to formal aspects and the elements of harmonic language.
Learning outcomes
The course introduces the variability of analytical systems and approaches in relationship to historical-cultural contexts, theoretical- aesthetical assumptions, and considered forms and works.
Course contents
The course introduces to the knowledge of main analytical methodologies codified for the music of 18th-20th Century such as Schenkerian analysis, Set-Theory, and Semiotic Analysis, among others.
For each methodology, theoretical assumptions and specific significant applications from recent musicological bibliography will be discussed.
Teaching methods
The course contemplates various learning modes which include frontal lecture, group exercises, readings of theoretical texts with critical commentary, guided listening, and score analysis.
Reccomended or required readings

Other specific readings will be introduced and commented during the specific didactic topics and provided on Kiro, including all didactical materials, scores, and lesson slides.
Assessment methods
The examination of the gained abilities is articulated in two phases. Before the exam, the candidate applies a written paper (ten days before the exam). The goal is to check the analytical skills in one of the discussed methods through a critical reading of a scientific paper chosen among a list indicated in the program which will be given at the end of the course. The paper, together with the scanned analyzed score may be sent by email to ingrid.pustijanac@unipv.it.
The exam in itself consists of a colloquium based upon the discussion of the paper, the historical aspects of the discipline, the specific aspects of illustrated analytical methodologies, with a commentary on selected examples.
All didactical material, bibliography, scores, and eventual bibliographical integrations, as well as the course slides, will be uploaded on Kiro.
Further information
Considering the learning difficulties of practical application of strongly formalized analytical methods such as those introduced during the course, the writing of individual papers represents a demanding moment. Therefore is highly recommended the consultation with the professor as well as the collaboration with the course tutor. All students are invited to profit by all available resources for a gradual and systematic learning. Students that will not participate in lessons are kindly invited to contact the professor as soon as possible (almost two months before the exam) in order to discuss and evaluate their knowledge gained through private learning or at the Conservatorium. Further readings will be accorded.
